How to know your skin type?

The epitome of youth- clear and beautiful skin. No matter our age or gender; one thing is for sure, we all strive for beautiful, smooth, and clear skin. Clear and smooth skin is the basis for looking youthful and beautiful. So you might be asking, how do I get clear and beautiful skin? The answer unfortunately is not that simple. Beautiful skin comes from having a consistent skincare routine. No matter what you do, if you do not have a regular skin routine, you will not get beautiful skin. You need to have a morning and evening regiment that tailors to the needs of your skin. Once you have a consistent skin routine, you are one step closer to having beautiful skin. Knowing if your skin is oily, dry, or combination is important. So how to know your skin type?

Flawless skin begins with knowing your skin type and then picking skincare and foundations to match your skin. Let’s being with “How to Know Your Skin Type?”

How to know your skin type?

Knowing your skin type will help you choose the type of foundation that is best for your skin as well as the type of skincare that you need in order to achieve radiant skin. The main skin types are oily, combination, dry, and normal; therefore most individuals will fall under one of these categories.

   Oily skin:
  • Frequent breakouts, especially on the nose, chin, and forehead
  • Shiny skin
  • Enlarge pours
  • Blackhead and whitehead
  • Makeup slides off your face or melts because oil settles on the top of your skin
Combination Skin:
Am I oily, dry, or combination?
  • Oily in your t-zones
  • Breakout and can be dry at the same time
  • Larger pores on your t-zones
  • Skin is oily in the summer and dry in the winter
  • Makeup looks patchy in some places
Dry Skin:
  • Skin feels tight and mask-like
  • Skin texture feels rough
  • Dull complexion
  • Fine lines and cracking skin surface
  • Patchy and cakey make up
Normal Skin
  • No blemishes
  • Pores are fine and not visible
  • Skin tone is even, and clear
  • Radiant complexion
  • Skin is neither too oily or dry

To find out what type of skin you have, follow these simple step at home:

How to know your skin type?
  1. Wash your face with a cleanser, and gently pat dry.
  2. Wait for 30 minutes- do not touch your face.

After cleansing, if your skin is shiny all over, you have oily skin. If you are oily in your t-zone but dry on your forehead and cheeks, you have combination skin. If your skin feels light and flaky, you have dry skin. Lastly, if your face feels comfortable, you have normal skin (lucky you!)

You can also use a blotting sheet to help you determine what type of skin you have:

  1. Wash your face with a cleanser, and gently pat dry.
  2. Wait for 30 minutes- do not touch your face.
  3. Lightly blot or tap your face with your blotting sheet.

After blotting and the blotting sheet is wet, you have oily skin. If the sheet only picks up oil in your t-zones but nothing on your cheek, then you have combination skin. If the blotting sheet is completely dry, you have dry skin. Lastly, if the botting sheet has minimal dampness, you have normal skin!

Now that you know your skin type, you are ready to choose products that are specific to your skin’s needs. Knowing your skin type is step one in achieving flawless beautiful skin.

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.”_ Oprah Winfrey

Throughout the month of March, many classrooms and homes across America and around the world celebrate by reading books. Children of all ages and in K-12 classroom engage in many topics about Women. This book tells the story of Malala Yousafzai. Malala grew up striving to change the way women were silenced in her country of birth. With her passion and braveness, she inspired girls around the world to speak up in order to create change in the world.

“I am a working girl. One of those who are on strike against intolerable conditions.”

This is the true story of Clara Lemlich. Clara and her family emigrated from Europe to America to start a better life. Emily’s husband was the chief engineer of the bridge, soon after the project started he got terribly sick. Not wanting to scrap the project, Emily took the job and all of its responsibilities. Nine months later, the famed Rosa Parks was also arrested. Parks became known as the face of the bus boycott while Claudette was shunned and teased at school. Newest Beauty Trends of 2021

2021 is the year we have all been waiting for. It is the year in which Covid-19 will be a thing of the past (hopefully). It is also the year when traveling, gatherings, and fun will presumably resume. 2021 is also the year for new beauty trends. This year, beginning in early Spring, we are expected to see some new beauty trends of 2021.

The newest beauty trends of 2021 will encompass many different and exciting looks as well as risks. You will see new makeup looks, hairstyles, and daring fashion. You will even see some throwback looks to previous decades. While some of you may still be sitting in your pajamas working over zoom with fashion being the last thing on your mind. We are hopeful that these newest beauty trends of 2021 will inspire and bring back some glamour into all of our lives (boy do we need it)!

Glowing Skin

This beauty trend of 2021 focuses on natural skin. “Skinimalism” is the term coined by Pinterest to describe this beauty trend. The trend focuses on the “no-makeup-makeup look.” With so many of us working from home and not applying makeup; this look is the ultimate natural glow up. It requires having consistent skincare and really taking care of your skin. With a good base, you can slab on some serums, oils, or a mist to achieve that natural skin glow.

Durable Lipsticks

Another upcoming beauty trend of 2021 is lipstick- especially liquid lipsticks and stains. While we are expecting that people will continue wearing face masks for the majority of the year; this means that lipstick choice will continue to be important. Most people will be looking for lipsticks that are long-lasting, smudge-proof, and will not leave stains on their masks. In addition, many experts say the color of the lipstick will not be as important as compared to the durability of the product.

Bangs

If you are thinking of getting bangs but unsure of whether or not it is for you, you are in luck! Bangs- specifically curtain bangs are making a comeback. This beauty trend of 2021 is making a serious reappearance. Many celebrities such as Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lopez can be seen rocking the look. The way to style this is to create more texture and to go a little shorter with the length. Framing the bangs around your face is also a choice for those who may not want their hair directly in their eyes.

Hair Accessories

Working and learning from home was an adjustment for everyone. While it had many challenges, it did allow time for playing around with hairstyles. 2020 was the year of the messy bun, ponytail, and uncombed bed hair. The year also saw an increase in the usage of hair accessories. Whether it was hair clips, headbands, or scrunchies, experimenting with different hair accessories will continue to be one of the newest beauty trends of 2021.

Manicured Funky Nails

With extra time on our hands, many of us turned to nail art. Many nail salons and spas were closed during the pandemic but that did not deter many from styling their own nails. Many ladies opted for brown earthy palettes with designs and shapes from the 70s’. Funky and colorful French-style manicures were also very popular. DIY was the name of the game, many also opted for press-on nails with colorful and intricate designs.

These are just some of the newest beauty trends of 2021, there are many more. Some other popular trends are monochrome makeup looks, 80’s makeup looks, as well as a return of colorful (especially blue) eyeliner looks. Whether you are working from home or have returned to work, trying one of these newest beauty trends of 2021 is a must. While this pandemic has cost so much stress, beauty is still one part of our life we can hold on to and still have some fun with.

Origin
Maltese dog breed

The Maltese breed of dog has been around for a very long time, no one quite knows for sure when the breed was first bred. The breed can be dated back all the way to the time of Aristotle as he once spoke of them. They were bred from a mix of poodle and miniature spaniel.  Maltese originates from Italy. They were first recognized as a breed in Malta (formerly a part of Italy). There they acquired the name “Maltese.” According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Maltese were nicknamed and referred to as “Ye ancient dogge of Malta.” They were owned by many aristocrats around the world as they were very beautiful with their long flowing white coats.

The breed made its way to other parts of Europe by European Crusaders. Eventually, they made the journey across the pond to the USA; there the breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1888.

Personality

The Maltese breed of dog is described as being lively, fearless, spirited, and cute. With their big dark eyes and white coat, it is hard to say no to a Maltese. The breed is also intelligent; they can learn many tricks if trained early on. Maltese dogs enjoy being outdoors. They love to run around and garner attention from their owners. They are good with other dogs and children. Like other small dogs, Maltese are prone to small dog syndrome. They need to have a pack leader so that they are aware of who their master is. If not, they will develop behavior problems such as excessive barking, jealousy, separation anxiety, and even biting.  With proper socialization and training, this breed is very loyal, happy, and playful. Maltese dogs respond to positive reinforcement. They will work hard to earn treats, food, and even praise.

Care

With their beautiful white coats, Maltese dogs need daily brushing. Their eyes will need to be cleaned daily to prevent discoloration. They also require their ears to be checked frequently for hair, fur to be shampooed and dried, frequent nail clipping, teeth brushing, as well as cleaning of their mouths after eating. This is a great dog to have for anyone with allergies as the breed hardly sheds. Maltese dogs require daily walking. They can be exercised if playing in a yard but you should still take them out for walks periodically. This breed loves to play both indoors and outdoors. Be mindful that they do not do well in both extreme heat or cold. They can be easily sunburned. This breed is moderately difficult to care for as they do require daily maintenance.

With proper care, this breed can live well into its teens.

Weight: Up to 7 pounds (3.2kg)

Rare Genetic Disorders In Humans

Genetic disorders basically occur due to gene mutation. The mutation may lead to a single gene not working properly or missing and thus affect the production of certain proteins in our body leading to the disorders. There are many genetic disorders but here are some of the rare genetic disorders in humans;

Hemophilia

This disorder occurs when your blood takes longer to clot in order to stop bleeding. There are clotting matter that is protein in nature which helps blood cells to stick together forming a clot. Hemophilia has two major types: A and B and can be mild, moderate, or severe depending on the clotting matter in your blood. The disease largely affects males where 1 in 5000 males is born with the disease.

Sickle cell anemia

It is a blood disorder that affects the hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin is usually found in the red blood cells that help in taking oxygen from the lungs to the tissues in the body. The normal red blood cell has a disc shape and is flexible. This enables it to pass through narrow blood vessels with ease. For sickle red blood cells, they have a sickle or crescent shape that is stiff. This easily causes blockage in the blood vessels, slowing blood from transporting oxygen to the tissues. Approximately 80,000 Americans are affected by the disease with a life expectancy of around 48 years. This type of rare genetic disorder in humans can over time lead to damage to major organs.

Albinism

Albinism is characterized by a total or partial absence of skin, eye, and hair pigment due to a lack of a protein called tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is responsible for the production of melanin. Albinism has led to various skin and eye problems for people suffering from it. Their skin is prone to skin cancers and burns from the sun. Also, the skin is easily susceptible to infections. Various visual problems can be caused by light sensitivity of the eye. About 1 person in 20,000 is born with albinism.

Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the rarest genetic disorders in humans. The disorder is a brain disease that leads to memory loss. The condition starts with not remembering recent events. As it continues other problems like getting lost and not being able to communicate and eventually losing body functions. The disease is believed to be caused 70% by gene disorder but some risks may also cause the disease to happen like head injuries. It has minimal survival chance and the affected persons may only last up to 10 years. The disease currently affects between 2.4 to 4.5 million Americans.

Down syndrome

The disorder occurs when a person has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome. The additional copy affects development by the person affected with the disease and other characteristics caused by the disease. Some of the physical traits may include low muscle tone and small stature. The disease also affects intelligence and thinking abilities, especially when the person gets to age 50. 1 in 700 newborns are born with the disease.

To avoid these rare genetic disorders in humans, couples can conduct genetic testing and counseling. A doctor specializing in genetics can help couples to avoid having a newborn with any of the disorders.

Origin
Golden Retriever, Goldie's

Golden Retrievers are the 2nd most popular dog breeds in the United States. The dogs were first bred in Scotland in the 1860-1870s by Lord Tweedmouth. Tweedmouth wanted to breed a dog that would be a companion for hunters but as well as loyal and friendly at home. Different dogs were bred including retrievers and spaniels. Tweedmouth gave the dogs he bred to his friends and family. Each time he experimented, he chose the dogs who were most loyal and calm to further breed. By 1904, a Golden Retriever of Lord Tweedmouth won the gundog league trial. In 1911, Golden Retrievers were officially named and in 1920 the breed was recognized by the kennel club in England. In 1932, the breed was officially accepted by the America kennel club. Golden Retrievers continue to be one of the most chosen dogs as pets throughout the world.

Personality

Loyal, caring, sweet, calm, and intelligent are all words one would use to describe a Golden Retriever. In addition to that, they are eager to please and friendly towards all. Goldens are able to get along with other pets and strangers. They are rarely ever aggressive or disobedient. Like other dogs, they require early training and socialization. Socializing them early on will help them in becoming the true Golden Retrievers that we all know and love. Because of their calm and intelligence, Golden Retrievers are popular dogs chosen to be guides for those who are blind or disabled; many of them are also involved in therapy work. Goldens are the happiest when playing a game of fetch or swimming.

Care

Goldens are heavy shedders. They continuously shed but about twice a year they go through a period of heavy shedding. To minimize the appearance of hair in your home, you can brush their coats 2-3 times per week. During heaving shedding times, you will need to brush daily. Giving them a bath periodically will also help in minimizing shedding in your home. Golden Retrievers need to be walked daily, twice a day is best. If they are not walking twice a day, you will need to ensure they are getting about an hour of robust activity per day. If not exercising enough, Goldens can misbehave! The good news is that it is easy to exercise a Golden. They enjoy being outdoors, jogging, hiking, running, etc.

In general, Golden Retrievers are easy to train; they are obedient and intelligent. Goldens are prone to obesity. A balanced diet and exercise will eliminate weight issues.

Potential Health Problems

A Golden Retriever is generally a healthy dog. During the age of 4-7 months, they rapidly double in size. As this is happening make sure that they are not running around or playing on hard pavements. This can lead to bone disorders. Other health ailments to look out for are elbow and hip dysplasia, eye conditions such as juvenile cataracts, and heart disease. Their ears should be check for infection weekly and their teeth should be brushed frequently.

Weight and Height

Weight: 55- 75 pounds (25- 34 kg)

Height: 21- 24 inches (53- 61 cm)

Lifespan

The life expectancy of a Golden Retriever is 10- 13 years.

Interesting Facts
  • The first three dogs to receive the American Kennel Club (AKC) obedience award were all Golden Retrievers.
  • They are one of the most popular dog breeds to be featured in movies.

Origin

Shih Tzu’s are one of the oldest dog breeds. According to dogster, “Chinese paintings from the 6th century A.D. shows Shih Tzu like dogs, while documents from the period claim these pets were a gift to the Chinese court from the Byzantine Empire.” Shih Tzu’s also date back to the Ming Dynasty of 1300- 1600 A.D. there they were considered to be house pets. Many myths date back the origin of this breed to Tibet. It is said that they were bred by Tibetan monks who wanted to wanted to recreate a small-scale replica of a lion, as it was the symbol associated with Buddhist mythology.

The name “Shih Tzu” was given to this breed by Chinese Emperors as the dogs were presented at court.  The name translates to “Little Lion.” In the early 1900s, the breed was in trouble of becoming extinct. With the return of many soldiers from Europe, they later resurfaced and made their way to the United States in the 1940s. Shih Tzu’s are now one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. They rank among the top 20 dog breeds according to AKC.

Personality

Shih Tzu’s are classified as a toy breed. One glance at them and you will see flowing hair, a curved tail, and head held high; one would say they appear snobbish, proud, or haughty. After spending a few minutes with them, you will be quick to notice that they are actually friendly, lively, and devoted. Shih Tzu’s enjoy nothing better than being petted, dotted on, and pampered. They are the perfect lap dog to have as a companion. Shih Tzu’s are not highly suspicious of strangers, they will, however, alert and bark if someone approaches. They are excellent with both adults and kids as they do a good job adjusting to their environment.

Care

Shih Tzu’s require constant care. You will need to clean their eyes, give them a bath every 3-4 weeks to keep their coats clean. You will aslo need to brush their coats daily. For easier grooming, you may want to give your lion dog a puppy cut. Whatever the cut you decide on, their nails and ears will need to be cleaned routinely. They are great dogs for people who may have allergies as they are hypoallergenic.

Shih Tzu’s needs a moderate amount of exercise. Be mindful, they do not do well with heat. If you live in a warm climate, make sure you have the air conditioning or a fan on. If going out on walks, it is best to do so in the early morning or night. Shih Tzu’s can be difficult to housebreak. They need constant care done in a supportive and gentle manner. You will need to use many rewards and praises. It would be helpful for Shih Tzu’s to attend puppy training early on.

About

“How We Fall is the story of Jackie and Marcus are teenagers whose parents have moved in together in rural Missouri. The rollercoaster ride begins when Jackie and Marcus develop feelings for each other. What makes their relationship complicated is that they are first cousins. Throughout the book, Jackie and Marcus battle their feelings for each other contemplating their feelings, the opinions of their family and friends towards their taboo relationship as well as societal norms. In the midst of it, they date other people and even get thrown into a murder mystery plot. In the end, will Jackie and Marcus break all norms and choose to be together or will they succumb to societal pressure?

Review

This was a very thrilling book. The story is well written and moves at a fast pace. The characters are convincing and full of unique personalities. There is a little bit of laughter, romance, adventure, and murder mystery built into the story. I rated this book a four out of 5. I love the story and concept of forbidden love as well as the internal journey and struggle the main characters endure. For this same reason, I can see how others can be turned off from reading about cousin relationships. It is, however, eye-opening and educating in that we often see such relationships as “gross” but so are in so many ways identical to what we would call “normal” relationships. I would recommend “How We Fall” to both adults and teens who want an eye-opening adventure but also want to challenge societal norms.
