A powerful earthquake struck the Tibet Autonomous Region of southwestern China on January 7, 2025, at 9:05 a.m. local time, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The quake, with a magnitude of 7.1 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, centered near Tingri County, approximately 100 miles southwest of Shigatse, a city of major religious significance in Tibetan Buddhism.

The disaster has led to at least 126 fatalities and over 150 injuries in Tibet. More than 1,000 homes have collapsed, leaving streets filled with debris and numerous individuals trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are underway, with over 3,000 personnel deployed to the affected areas.

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond China’s borders, with tremors felt in Nepal, India, and Bhutan. In Nepal, strong shaking was experienced in the capital city, Kathmandu, and surrounding regions, though no significant damage or injuries have been reported there.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive rescue efforts and has allocated 100 million yuan (approximately $13.6 million) for disaster relief. The challenging terrain and cold temperatures, with forecasts predicting lows of -18°C (0°F), are complicating rescue efforts. Authorities have distributed thick blankets and other essential supplies to support those affected by the disaster.

The region where the earthquake occurred is known for its seismic activity due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This event is the most powerful earthquake recorded within a 200-kilometer radius in the past five years.

As rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid ongoing aftershocks, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The international community has begun to express condolences and offers of assistance to support the affected populations during this challenging time.
