Pomeranians were first bred in Poland and Germany as a Spitz-type dog breed. They are known by many names such as  Deutscher Spitz and Zwergspitz. More popularly, they are called Pompom, Pom, and tumbleweed. Pomeranian dog breeds were made popular by Queen Victoria and other royal owners in the 18th century. In the United States, they are ranked among the fifty most popular dog breeds to own.

Personality

Pomeranians are active, playful, and friendly dogs. They are intelligent, sociable, and eager to learn; this makes them easy to train. They are also very alert, as a result, they will bark and alert you for all suspicious activities. Pomeranians also have an independent nature. They use their intelligence to get into mischief often, especially if they are unsupervised or bored. Pomeranians can be stubborn, they require a firm but loving leader.

Care

Pomeranian dog breeds require daily brushing and frequent grooming. Regular dental check-ups and daily cleaning of the eyes and ears is necessary. Playing will take care of most of their exercise needs however daily walking is recommended. Pomeranians are known for excessive barking, they benefit from learning commands such as “sit, stop, and no.”

Potential health problems

Pomeranians can develop possible health problems such as heart disease, eye and ear infections, skin irritation, and dislocated kneecap or patella. They can also develop tooth decay and early teeth loss.

Weight: 3 – 7 pounds (1.4 – 3.2 kg)

Height: 7 – 12 inches (17.8 – 30.5 cm)

Lifespan

The life expectancy of  Pomeranians are about 12 to 16 years.
