Origin of Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkshire Terriers also called “Yorkies”, first appeared in Yorkshire, England in the 19th century. Yorkies are small breed dogs that were used for rat baiting and also for catching rats in clothing mills.

Personality

This small dog is very energetic, adventurous, loyal, and brave.  Yorkies are cleaver and easy to train; they are also affectionate and make a good companion. It is important for the human to be the pack leader, if not they can become aggressive to strangers and also other dogs and animals.

Care

Yorkies are high energy dogs and require daily walks, walking twice each day is best. It is best to go walking in the morning and then again in the evening. If they don’t get enough exercise they can display behavioral problems. Yorkshire Terriers are better behaved when on a daily schedule. Yorkies do not shed, their coat is similar to the texture of human hair. They are known for their long, flowing silky coat which can be time-consuming to care for. They require regular grooming, daily to weekly combing, and brushing. Keeping the coat in a puppy cut makes it easier to maintain.

Potential health problems

Yorkshire Terriers can develop potential health problems such as early tooth decay, bronchitis caused by inflamed bronchial airways, eye infection, and hereditary cataracts which is common in purebred Yorkies. Hereditary cataracts can develop at a young age (between 1 and 5 years old). Yorkshire Terriers also have a delicate digestive system that can cause diarrhea and vomiting, resulting from the consumption of foods that are not part of their regular diet.  Yorkies with underlying health problems can have poor tolerance for anesthesia.

Weight and Height

Weight: Approximately 7 pounds (3.2 kg)

Height: Approximately 6 – 7 inches (15 – 17½ cm)
