Maltese- “Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta”

Origin

The Maltese breed of dog has been around for a very long time, no one quite knows for sure when the breed was first bred. The breed can be dated back all the way to the time of Aristotle as he once spoke of them. They were bred from a mix of poodle and miniature spaniel.  Maltese originates from Italy. They were first recognized as a breed in Malta (formerly a part of Italy). There they acquired the name “Maltese.” According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Maltese were nicknamed and referred to as “Ye ancient dogge of Malta.” They were owned by many aristocrats around the world as they were very beautiful with their long flowing white coats.

The breed made its way to other parts of Europe by European Crusaders. Eventually, they made the journey across the pond to the USA; there the breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1888.

Personality

The Maltese breed of dog is described as being lively, fearless, spirited, and cute. With their big dark eyes and white coat, it is hard to say no to a Maltese. The breed is also intelligent; they can learn many tricks if trained early on. Maltese dogs enjoy being outdoors. They love to run around and garner attention from their owners. They are good with other dogs and children. Like other small dogs, Maltese are prone to small dog syndrome. They need to have a pack leader so that they are aware of who their master is. If not, they will develop behavior problems such as excessive barking, jealousy, separation anxiety, and even biting.  With proper socialization and training, this breed is very loyal, happy, and playful. Maltese dogs respond to positive reinforcement. They will work hard to earn treats, food, and even praise.

Care

With their beautiful white coats, Maltese dogs need daily brushing. Their eyes will need to be cleaned daily to prevent discoloration. They also require their ears to be checked frequently for hair, fur to be shampooed and dried, frequent nail clipping, teeth brushing, as well as cleaning of their mouths after eating. This is a great dog to have for anyone with allergies as the breed hardly sheds. Maltese dogs require daily walking. They can be exercised if playing in a yard but you should still take them out for walks periodically. This breed loves to play both indoors and outdoors. Be mindful that they do not do well in both extreme heat or cold. They can be easily sunburned. This breed is moderately difficult to care for as they do require daily maintenance.

Potential Health Problems

The Maltese breed are fairly healthy dogs. When purchasing, make sure you are buying from responsible breeders. Breeders should be able to provide screening of the parents as well as the puppy you are purchasing. While this is a healthy breed, they are still prone to health problems such as patellar luxation, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), liver shunt, microvascular dysplasia, eye diseases, etc. It is also important that you brush your Maltese teeth daily with doggie toothpaste. With proper care, this breed can live well into its teens.

Lifespan

The life expectancy of the Maltese breed is 12-15 years. Many have also lived as long as 18 years old.
